A White Sheep With a Black Head Baby

With their panda-similar eyes and piebald, shaggy coats, they look like they've waltzed out of a Disney animation. Valais blacknose are called the "cutest sheep in the world." And right now, they're the hottest ticket in the sheep globe.

The Valais is an ancient breed that originated in the Swiss Alps, where for centuries it was used for meat and wool. Historically few in number, in the past decade, the animals' adorable looks have propelled them into prominence. And at present they're proliferating, purely as a pet.

The breed has spread to Europe, the Uk, and the Us, and this yr the first Valais reached New Zealand and Australia.

For its Australian importers, it's quite a coup.

"Information technology'due south probably the elevation of the sheep breeds to bring into the country, and a lot of people have wished for it," said Tony Urek, a sheep and goat producer from south-westward Victoria.

Information technology has taken Mr Urek and his partner, Belinda Cardinal, iv years to achieve.

'We had no thought whether information technology would exist successful'

The couple had seen Valais blacknose in the United Kingdom a decade ago.

Like most, they were drawn to their adorable advent. Only also like others earlier them, they discovered Australia'due south stringent quarantine measures made importing sheep genetic fabric nearly impossible.

Only Ms Key had already succeeded at importing goats. A geneticist, she'd spent years trying to boost production in dairy goats. Part of that quest involved bringing in several productive goat breeds from the U.s..

If she could import goats, why non sheep?

That, as it transpired, turned into a far bigger gamble than they could e'er accept imagined. Australia'south last sheep importations had been more than than a decade before. The toll of the scientific work and quarantine procedures was steep. The odds of success were unknown.

Undaunted, the couple staked their life savings on the venture.

Getting them into Australia

They identified Valais blacknose animals in the United Kingdom that met the strict standards for the breed, and also passed the stringent veterinary ones.

Then they started to striking obstacles. Outset, Brexit threatened the importation process. Then the global pandemic about scuttled it. Laboratories in the UK were forced to close. Their precious genetic cloth of embryos and semen, stored in liquid nitrogen in airtight canisters, was thrown into limbo.

"Everything just dragged out, and the expenses kept going upwards, and it seemed like a money pit," Mr Urek said.

Luckily the embryos appeared unharmed. Calling on all her scientific skills, Ms Cardinal implanted them into large-framed, surrogate ewes, so the lambs had every chance of survival.

The birth of the kickoff lamb

In April, when the first lambs were due to emerge, Mr Urek was like a nervous, expectant male parent in a infirmary maternity ward.

"It was amazing when I saw the first one hit the ground," he said.

"I was there with the towel ready, and information technology was really emotional."

The successful birth rate was lx per cent, an splendid result.

"[It was] very nerve-wracking considering anything could go wrong, but we were very lucky and we got them all out safely, so [it was] an amazing feeling," Ms Cardinal said.

In the short term, the couple are preparing to build up the numbers of their nucleus flock. The ewes won't reach convenance age until next year. And they'll need to proceed bringing in other fresh genetic fabric to deepen the gene pool.

They're not going cheap

The couple's other imperative is to compensate their sizeable financial investment. They've sold a few non-breeding animals to approved clients, with the wethers (castrated males) going for $7,000 each and the ewes for $25,000.

That'due south big money for a non-commercial sheep. But Brenton Heazlewood, president of the Australian Stud Sheep Breeders' Association, is welcoming the arrival of the Valais blacknose.

He believes their successful importation opens the door for other breeds desperately in demand of a fresh genetic infusion from overseas.

"I brood English Leicesters. We've had them in the family since at least 1871," Mr Heazlewood said.

At that place's little doubt that Valais blacknose will be pop hither amidst pet owners and hobby farmers. But it'll be several years earlier they're available — and affordable.

Ms Cardinal is proud of what she and Tony have achieved and excited near the route ahead.

She admits information technology was a case of love at first sight, and says the Valais haven't disappointed her.

"Their temperament is second to none. They're just totally different to your average sheep and very people oriented, so having them equally a pet is an choice," she said.
